Lily's Interests and Thoughts and Whatnot

Fronted by North Carolina native Karly Hartzman, Wednesday blends indie grunge rock and alternative country/folk in a way that’s unique to the southern roots of the band members

As someone from Massachusetts, it might seem hard to believe that this band has become one of my all time favorites. Yet, something about their music feels familiar to me in a way that is difficult to describe.

I could go on and on about Wednesday in general, but what I really want to talk about is their song “Townies” and why it’s my song of the day for October 11th. It has less to do with the band and the song itself (although I love them both dearly and have been listening to them a great deal lately), and much more to do with the circumstances of my day.

As I drove to work today, I played my “October 2025” playlist. It features musical acts such as Geese, Frost Children, Water From Your Eyes, Lily Seabird, and (of course) Wednesday. After I clumsily street parked in front of my coworker ‘s car and he watched me adjust and readjust my car at least three times to get it closer to the curb, Townies came on. At that point, I didn’t have time to listen to it in full before heading into work but it still stuck with me. I strode into the back room of the store, humming it. I clocked in, humming it. Every second of downtime throughout the day, it populated my brain.

I had been talking about Geese and about what other things we had been listening to lately with a coworker of mine the other day. I had recommended Wednesday to her. Today, she told me she started listening to the new album. I was surprised and excited that she seemed to have enjoyed what she’d heard at least a little bit. She told me her favorite so far was “Townies.” I didn’t realize until much later in the day what a crazy coincidence it was that someone would bring up the song I’d been humming all day, unprompted and entirely unaware of that fact.

Thus, “Townies” has been crowned my first official song of the day!

It’s unbelievably catchy and surprisingly tonally upbeat for a song about rumors in small towns, the people that create them and are impacted by them, and how growing up can change your perspective on all of those things.

Semi-related but Karly Hartzman my GOAT forever. Love you queen. I’m not sure how long I’ll even keep writing this blog but she’s kind of the reason I started it to begin with. I only found her blog like a month ago but she’s kind of inspired me to try and stay off social media more and made me realize that writing out into the void could be a good thing for me.
