Lily's Interests and Thoughts and Whatnot

Sometimes I feel like talking about my interests and don't really feel like boring my friends with my thoughts on things via social media. Also I am trying to limit my time on social media in general and I think this will help!

I think it’s worth mentioning that I found myself coming back to Heavy Metal by Cameron Winter and 3D Country by Geese a lot this month, too. Not sure why I never added them to my playlist.

It’s pretty astonishing to me how much of this month I spent with a cold or some other virus I managed to catch. I’d say 3/4 of this month I spent with some sort of illness. It’s been pretty miserable to be honest. Yet, I’ve had some really insightful and beautiful interpersonal moments lately. I attribute a lot of that to the music I’ve had soundtracking my life.

Even though the show wasn’t in October, I wanted to add a little footnote about Racing Mount Pleasant because I just got into them. I saw them play a headlining show last night at The Echo and they were amazing. The energy in the room was electric. Such talented musicians. They’re going to be huge, I can just feel it. Get into them now! They only have two albums to listen to so no excuses!

I’m lucky to have a friend who is super tapped into indie music, new music, and music in general (way more than I am) because I asked them if I should listen to RMP and they gave a stellar recommendation along with a favorite song of theirs to check out. I trust their taste implicitly and I was right in doing so! They’re awesome! And so kind to folks who come to their shows!

  • To be honest, what made my experience so great overall wasn’t just the fact that WFYE are such great performers. The venue and the crowd contributed a great deal. I could really afford to be in the moment and enjoy the music in a way I have found rare as a concertgoer these days.

I’m still pretty new to LA and to attending concerts in general. That being said, Lodge Room is my favorite venue I’ve ever been to by a mile. From the jump, I knew my night would go smoothly. I immediately found free street parking less than a 5 minute walk from the venue. I showed up at doors, briefly checked in, went through a quick security screening and then I was inside. They have a full bar and restaurant attached, which is a huge plus if you’re going with friends. There is also a bar inside the actual room/venue. There is a separate room where the merch table is, as well. It’s all very well laid out. The room itself is beautiful. It was formerly a Masonic lodge and still has all the intricate woodwork and paintings on the walls. There are some gorgeous chandeliers on the ceiling. As people trickled in, there wasn’t really an urgency to immediately rush to the front and claim their spot. People sat along the sides and stood scattered throughout the room, chatting with one another until the first opener went on and they moved toward the stage. The calmness in the space was so refreshing for a concert.

I was pleasantly surprised by the demeanor of the crowd, in general. There was a lightness along with the excitement in the air. Nobody heckled except to shout their support a couple of times. People cheered and clapped but nothing obnoxious. The people next to me were really into the show, which made me feel like I could be too. It felt like a really safe space. For a long time, I was scared of going to standing room only shows (which is most shows) because I knew I would get pushed around. This was a rare instance where I never got pushed even once. I barely even got accidentally grazed by an elbow. Sometimes at concerts, people inch closer and closer to me to the point where I don’t even realize that I’ve “moved out of the way” so much that I’m on the other side of the room, resulting in a terrible view of the stage. Instead, I actually felt like I had personal space, which is honestly unheard of at just about any concert you may attend.

I suppose my only qualm is that being so close, the drums really overpowered the vocals. I felt like the vocals sounded pretty muddy, and the drums were super loud but I think it’s probably just where I was positioned right in front of the stage. Otherwise, I loved it in there. The vibes were perfect. I’m itching to go to another show there asap. Unfortunately a lot of the shows that interest me are sold out already and the rest of their slate isn’t really my vibe or I just am not at all familiar with the artists. I might see feeble little horse next week and I’ll probably see Skullcrusher in march. There are a few other artists I don’t recognize but may check out because for under $40 (I spent $25 including fees on my WFYE ticket), to have such a pleasant experience and hear some great live music, is just so rare. It’s rare not just in LA, but anywhere really. I want to take all my friends there. I have a feeling it’s going to become one of my favorite places here.

  • I like how her sound is evolving and the electronic-influenced pop sound she seems interested in at the moment is something I’m very into. I hope she continues to make music like this because I wholeheartedly believe this song is pop perfection. Every part of it is catchy, but not in a way that sounds boring or overly familiar. It’s empowering but not in the cringey, out of touch way that many pop stars attempt. The song is both personal and universal, which is exactly how pop music should be. I have had every single section of this song stuck in my head at various times of the day. That’s why it’s my song of the day! (Also, I rang someone out at work today who really looked like Empress Of and now I’m kinda contemplating if it was her because I know she’s from this area/playing a show here tomorrow. It probably wasn’t her though lol.)

Even though I’ve been trying to stay offline, I’ll admit I first heard this song on TikTok. A post from the artist promoting it came up on my feed and I was instantly hooked. The more I listen to it, the more I love it. I was surprised at how hard it hit me the first time I heard her sing, “Every single sound is getting me through/I’ve been fucking down for a while.” It sounds so silly, but I had been struggling with feeling happy or excited about much of anything for a few weeks when I heard this song. I’d been on the up at that point, and had been trying to listen to more pop/electronic music to get myself out of my funk. (After the MJ Lenderman concert I went to in September, I got really into Jason Molina and boy, does that get depressing quick!) Anyway, this song was just what I was looking for. She makes clever nods to Joni Mitchell’s “A Case of You” and Bobby McFerrin’s “Don’t Worry Be Happy” in the bridge that speak to a similar experience of using music as a means of bringing up one’s mood. Really the whole song is about that.

Music can be so healing. A great song can bring you back to yourself in a way very few other things can. “Blasting Through the Speakers” is both an ode to that experience and also is that very thing. God, it’s so good I can’t get over it.

Empress Of is also currently touring with Lorde which is so exciting! I’m sure this song is super fun to hear live.

Here’s the visualizer from her YouTube channel:

  • As someone from Massachusetts, it might seem hard to believe that this band has become one of my all time favorites. Yet, something about their music feels familiar to me in a way that is difficult to describe.

I could go on and on about Wednesday in general, but what I really want to talk about is their song “Townies” and why it’s my song of the day for October 11th. It has less to do with the band and the song itself (although I love them both dearly and have been listening to them a great deal lately), and much more to do with the circumstances of my day.

As I drove to work today, I played my “October 2025” playlist. It features musical acts such as Geese, Frost Children, Water From Your Eyes, Lily Seabird, and (of course) Wednesday. After I clumsily street parked in front of my coworker ‘s car and he watched me adjust and readjust my car at least three times to get it closer to the curb, Townies came on. At that point, I didn’t have time to listen to it in full before heading into work but it still stuck with me. I strode into the back room of the store, humming it. I clocked in, humming it. Every second of downtime throughout the day, it populated my brain.

I had been talking about Geese and about what other things we had been listening to lately with a coworker of mine the other day. I had recommended Wednesday to her. Today, she told me she started listening to the new album. I was surprised and excited that she seemed to have enjoyed what she’d heard at least a little bit. She told me her favorite so far was “Townies.” I didn’t realize until much later in the day what a crazy coincidence it was that someone would bring up the song I’d been humming all day, unprompted and entirely unaware of that fact.

Thus, “Townies” has been crowned my first official song of the day!

It’s unbelievably catchy and surprisingly tonally upbeat for a song about rumors in small towns, the people that create them and are impacted by them, and how growing up can change your perspective on all of those things.

Semi-related but Karly Hartzman my GOAT forever. Love you queen. I’m not sure how long I’ll even keep writing this blog but she’s kind of the reason I started it to begin with. I only found her blog like a month ago but she’s kind of inspired me to try and stay off social media more and made me realize that writing out into the void could be a good thing for me.

Anyway, here’s a link to the Townies music video, directed by Lance Bangs. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E8cKoQqdtwA
